First Christmas Without Them: Memorial Ornaments and Keepsakes for the Holidays
The first holiday after a loss is one of the hardest. Here's how a small keepsake can help, and how to offer one gently.

The first Christmas after losing someone is hard in a way that's difficult to explain. The traditions are the same, but there's an empty seat, a missing stocking, and a name nobody says out loud. Some people want a way to include that person in the holidays. A small keepsake can help.
An ornament they can hang, or not
A memorial ornament gives someone a choice. They can hang it on the tree, set it on a shelf, or put it away until they're ready. The point isn't to make it sad, it's to give them a way to include the person they've lost.
What should you put on a memorial ornament?
A name and the years are the usual details. Some people add a short line, like "Always in our hearts," a favorite saying, or a nickname. A handwritten note from the person, or a paw print for a pet, makes it even more personal. Keep it simple.
For a pet
Losing a pet is a real loss, and the first holiday without them can be just as hard. A paw print with the pet's name and the years is a small, kind thing to give.
What should you say when you give a memorial ornament?
Keep it short. "I was thinking of you, and I wanted you to have this" is plenty. Avoid trying to make it better with phrases like "they're in a better place." Most people just want to know someone is thinking about them.
What if the person doesn't want a reminder?
Some people aren't ready for a memorial this soon, and that's okay. If you aren't sure, ask first, or offer to hold on to it until next year. A gift that's offered gently is easier to accept.
A stocking, a candle, or a place at the table
Some families keep a stocking for the person they lost and hang it every year. A name tag for that stocking, or a small engraved piece for the mantel, is a way to keep that tradition going.
When should you order?
Early November gives us time to make it right. A memorial piece deserves a careful proof and time to get it right. If you're ordering for someone else, allow extra time for shipping.
Tell us who you're remembering and what you'd like to say, and we'll take care with it.
