Gifts for Tradesmen: Welders, Electricians, Mechanics, and Linemen
People who work with their hands already own the tools. Here's what to give them that survives the truck and actually gets used.

If someone works with their hands for a living, they already own the tools they need, and they have strong opinions about the brands. The usual advice is to buy them a gift card. That's fine. It's also forgettable. Here's what works better for welders, electricians, mechanics, linemen, and anybody else who works hard for a paycheck.
Things that survive the truck
Anything that lives in a work truck gets beat up. A metal ammo can makes a great gear box for small tools, fuses, and the things that always roll around under the seat. An engraved name on the lid keeps it from getting mixed up on a job site.
A knife or multitool
People in the trades carry a knife every day. Initials on the handle make it theirs, and it keeps it from disappearing when five people have the same one.
Tags for gear and lunch boxes
Leather or metal tags for tool bags, lunch coolers, and gate boxes help keep gear from walking off. A name and a phone number on a tag has saved more than one missing toolbag.
A plaque for the shop wall
For a business owner or a crew leader, a wood sign with the shop name and the year makes a good addition to the office or the front counter. For an apprentice finishing their program, a plaque with the trade and the date marks a real accomplishment.
What do you give someone who already owns every tool?
Something that isn't a tool. A cutting board, a coaster set, or a sign for the garage or shop adds a personal touch to a space they already spend time in.
What gift holds up in a work truck?
Metal and sealed wood hold up better than anything delicate. Leather also takes a beating well. If something is going to ride around loose, tell us and we'll steer you toward a material that can handle it.
Tell us the trade and what you're thinking, and we'll help you find something they'll use.
