Bow Season Gear: Commemorating a First Buck and Marking the Stand
Bow season opens this week. Here's how to mark opening weekend, and what to do when someone tags their first buck.

Archery season opens this week across Mississippi and Louisiana, ahead of gun season later in the fall. Whether it's a lifelong hunter or a kid heading out with a bow for the first time, here's what actually gets used once the season's underway.
Marking the stand or blind
A lot of hunters name their stand, their blind, or the property itself, whether it's official or just what everyone in the family calls it. A small engraved sign at the base of a stand or on the blind door adds a permanent marker to a spot that usually only exists in stories and group texts.
A first buck deserves more than a photo
The photo gets taken, gets posted, and then mostly forgotten in a camera roll. An engraved plaque with the hunter's name, the date, and the details, rack score, weapon used, property name, turns a phone photo into something that gets hung on a wall.
What actually goes on a first-buck plaque?
Keep it specific. The date and the hunter's name are the minimum, but adding the property or stand name, the weapon (compound bow, crossbow, recurve), and a short detail like point count makes it feel like it's about that exact hunt instead of a generic hunting trophy plaque.
Gear for the hunter, not just the memory
A knife with initials on the handle, a set of engraved calls, or a durable dog tag for a gear bag all get used every single trip, not just displayed once. These make good gifts heading into archery season for someone who's already got the basics covered.
Does a kid's first hunt need its own kind of gift?
Yes, and it's one of the more meaningful ones we make. A youth hunter's first successful season, whether it ends in a harvest or not, is worth marking with something that shows the effort mattered. A simple engraved knife or a small plaque with "First Season, [Year]" works well here.
How soon can you get a plaque made after a hunt?
Standard turnaround applies, so if there's a family gathering or a specific date you want it ready for, let us know up front. Otherwise, most plaques are ready well within a normal season.
Tell us about the hunt, or the hunter, and we'll help you build something that actually belongs on the wall next to the mount.
