Wood, Leather, Silver: A No-Nonsense Guide to Traditional Anniversary Gifts by Year
There's an actual list for which material matches which anniversary year. Most people have never seen it. Here's how to use it.
Somewhere along the way, tradition assigned a material to every wedding anniversary year. Most people have heard of the 25th being silver and the 50th being gold, but the list goes a lot deeper, and it lines up surprisingly well with what we actually engrave.
Why does an anniversary even have a material assigned to it?
The tradition dates back further than most people realize, originally tied to how long a marriage was expected to hold up. Paper for year one because it's fragile and new. Wood for year five because it's sturdier but still needs care. The materials get more durable as the years go on, which is a nice bit of symbolism even if most couples aren't thinking about it that way.
The early years
Year 1 is paper. Year 3 is leather, which is where an engraved wallet or leather journal actually fits the tradition instead of just being a nice gift. Year 5 is wood, and this is where things get easy for us. A cutting board, a wood sign, or a wall clock all fall squarely into the wood anniversary.
The middle years
Year 9 is pottery, year 10 is tin or aluminum. Year 13 is lace, which doesn't translate to engraving, but year 15 is crystal and year 20 is china, both of which pair well with an engraved display stand or gift box to go with them.
Do the later years still have materials?
Yes. Year 25 is silver, year 30 is pearl, year 40 is ruby, and year 50 is gold. For milestone years like these, an engraved keepsake box or frame that references the actual anniversary material tends to mean more than a generic gift, because it shows you knew the tradition existed at all.
Making it personal instead of gimmicky
The material doesn't have to be literal. A 5th anniversary gift doesn't need to be made entirely of wood, but incorporating a wood engraved element, a cutting board with both names and the date, a wood sign with your wedding coordinates, ties the gift back to something bigger than "we've been married five years."
