A well-made cutting board is one of those gifts that gets used every single day. Add a custom engraving and it becomes something personal that stays in the kitchen for years. Here's what you need to know before ordering one.
Wood Types and How They Engrave
Walnut is our most popular choice for engraved boards. It's a rich dark brown that creates high contrast with the engraved area. Maple is lighter and gives a more subtle look. Cherry sits in between and darkens with age. All three engrave cleanly and hold up well in a kitchen.
End Grain vs Edge Grain
End grain boards are the butcher block style — the wood fibers run vertically. They're gentler on knife edges and absorb more laser energy, which means a slightly deeper engrave. Edge grain boards have a smoother surface and produce a crisper, more detailed engraving. Both work well; the choice depends on whether the board will be a daily user or more of a display piece.
Where to Place the Engraving
We recommend engraving in one corner or along one edge rather than dead center. This leaves the main cutting surface clear and keeps the engraving out of the way of knife work. For text, a corner placement with the text running parallel to the edge looks clean and intentional.
What Engraves Best
Names, dates, monograms, and short phrases work great. Simple line art like a state outline, a heart, or a family crest engraves cleanly. Avoid fine text under 1/2 inch — it can blur on wood grain, especially on end grain boards.
Care for Engraved Boards
Engraved areas are slightly recessed, so they need the same care as the rest of the board. Hand wash only, no dishwasher. Oil regularly with food-grade mineral oil or board conditioner. The engraving will darken slightly over time as the board takes on oil, which actually makes it look better.
