How to Care for 3D Printed Keepsakes and Decor

A care guide for 3D printed lithophanes, figurines, and decor pieces, covering cleaning, sunlight exposure, and general handling tips.

3D printed pieces, whether it's a lithophane, a figurine, or a decorative planter, are more durable than people expect, but they aren't invincible. A little bit of care keeps them looking sharp for years instead of fading or warping after a few months.

What 3D Printed Items Are Made Of

Most 3D printed pieces are made from plastic filament, built up layer by layer. That construction gives them a lot of durability for everyday handling, but it also means they behave differently than solid wood, metal, or glass when it comes to heat and sunlight.

Keep Them Out of Direct, Prolonged Sunlight

This is the single biggest thing to watch for. Extended direct sunlight can cause the plastic to fade, discolor, or in extreme cases warp slightly over time, especially in a hot car or a windowsill that gets strong afternoon sun.

A lithophane on a shelf away from a window, or a figurine on a desk that isn't in direct sun most of the day, will hold its color and shape far longer than one sitting in a bright windowsill all summer.

    Watch Out for Heat

Along the same lines, keep printed pieces away from heat sources, a car dashboard, a spot right next to a heating vent, or near a stove or fireplace. High heat can soften or warp the plastic even if there's no direct sunlight involved.

    Cleaning

    • Dust with a soft, dry cloth or a soft brush for detailed pieces like figurines
    • For light grime, use a barely damp cloth and dry it right away
    • Avoid harsh chemical cleaners or solvents, which can dull or damage the surface
    • Skip the dishwasher and any prolonged soaking in water

For lithophanes especially, be gentle around the thinner, detailed areas where the image is formed. These sections are more delicate than the surrounding frame.

    Displaying Lithophanes

Lithophanes are designed to be lit from behind, so a small LED light or stand made for that purpose will show off the image the way it's meant to be seen. Avoid using a bright, hot light source held too close, since that combines both the sunlight and heat concerns into one spot.

    Storage and Handling

If you need to pack a piece away, wrap it in a soft cloth and store it somewhere temperature stable, not an attic, garage, or car trunk where temperatures swing widely. Handle detailed figurines by their base rather than thinner or protruding details, which are more prone to snapping under pressure.

Treated with a bit of care, a 3D printed keepsake holds up just as well as pieces made from more traditional materials. The main things to avoid are simple: too much sun, too much heat, and rough handling.
