How to Care for Laser Engraved Wood and Leather Items

Simple steps to keep your custom laser engraved wood and leather pieces looking good for years. Cleaning tips, what to avoid, and storage advice for heirloom-quality results.

Custom laser engraving on wood and leather creates pieces meant to last. Whether it's a walnut gift box, leather wallet, cutting board, or family tree sign, the right care keeps the engraving sharp and the material in good shape.

Here's exactly what you need to do.

Wood Care (Walnut, Oak, and Similar Hardwoods)

Cleaning: Wipe with a dry or slightly damp microfiber cloth. For light dirt, use a cloth lightly dampened with water only. Avoid household cleaners, soaps, or anything with alcohol or chemicals.

Avoid moisture: Never soak the piece or put it in the dishwasher. Water can raise the grain or cause warping over time.

Oiling (optional but recommended): Once or twice a year, apply a thin coat of food-safe mineral oil or beeswax finish to walnut and other hardwoods. This helps protect the surface and brings out the color. Let it absorb fully before using.

Sunlight: Keep pieces out of direct sunlight for long periods. UV light can fade the wood and the engraving contrast.

    Leather Care

Cleaning: Wipe with a dry cloth. For light marks, use a leather cleaner made for finished leather or a damp cloth with a tiny amount of mild soap. Test on a small area first.

Conditioning: Apply a leather conditioner every 6–12 months. This prevents drying and cracking while keeping the engraving visible.

Avoid: Harsh chemicals, excessive water, and extreme heat. Do not use saddle soap or anything abrasive on engraved leather.

    General Storage and Handling Tips

    • Store items in a cool, dry place away from heat sources and humidity swings.
    • For gift boxes and signs, keep them upright or flat — avoid stacking heavy objects on top.
    • When shipping or traveling with engraved pieces, wrap them in soft cloth or bubble wrap to prevent scratches.
    • If the piece has a stand (like the family tree sign), check the stand hardware periodically and tighten if needed.

    When to Get It Refreshed

Engraving on wood and leather holds up well, but heavy use or improper storage can dull the contrast over many years. We can re-engrave or touch up pieces in most cases. Just send us a photo and we'll let you know what's possible.

Most of our custom work uses quality materials chosen for durability. With basic care, these pieces stay looking sharp for a long time.
